Motorcycle Repair: Side cover for a Honda 1974 CB550four, worst case scenario, motorcycle parts and accessories

Question
Hey Falcon,
I wanted to know if a right side cover for a 1972 CB500four will fit
on a 1974 cb550four. also I wondered if you had any advice on
how to loosen a stuck bleeded screw on th front brakes of my 1974
cb550four. It's an old bike so I'm trying to be delicate but the screw
just dosent want to budge. Happy New Year.

Answer
Hi G.

Oh, the CB550.....That was my 2nd bike.  They were like a Timex....takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

As far as the sidecover, I am not certain, but they should be interchangable.  SHOULD is the operative word.  If you go to a Honda dealer, they will be able to tell you for sure in the parts department.

As far as the bleed screw, you should be able to spray some rust solvent on it to break it free, but don't expect to break it free right away.  Let it sit for a few hours and then reapply the solvent.  Then let it sit overnight.  Reapply and try to break it free.

Worst case scenario, you will have to replace the assembly.  Any bike salvage yard should have a brake assembly that will work for you, if you need to go that route.  If the screw is damaged, just order another one.  Either through the dealership or online through any of a miriad of motorcycle parts and accessories places.

Let me know what happens.

Good luck and ride safe.
