Motorcycle Repair: Kick stand indicator light stays on, suzuki intruder, clutch lever

Question
Mark,

I own a 1986 Suzuki Intruder (vs700). I put it up for storage last year and when I tried to start it this year, it gets nothing. No click at the starter, or solenoid. The lights turn on, the horn works, but the kick stand indicator light will not turn off. I disconnected the switch, closed the circuit, opened the circuit, but the lights remains on. I don't know if that is the reason it won't start, or if there is something more. Also all of the fuses are fine.

Any help would be great and thank you in advance.

Regards,
Mike

Answer
Hi Mike,

The side stand switch is a safety sw that would prevent starting. Same with the neutral sw and clutch lever sw.

Isolate the side stand sw and check continuity. Ensure it is working properly. Trace circuit backwards, testing as you go.

In some cases, a defective CDI would cause similar problems.

Check wiring for evidence of chewing. Check airbox and other areas for nests.
