Motorcycle Repair: jettins s&s, air fuel mixture, intermediate jet

Question
1987 fxstc. i installed 2 inch sampson pipes. everything else on bike is stock, except s&s e carb. what jets, intermediate and main should i start with. the plugs are gapped at 38  thank you

Answer
Start with the jets that are in it. Alot of harleys jet differently, even though they are the same.
To jet the carb, start by turning off the pumper. Now start the bike and let it warm up. Adjust the air fuel mixture screw by slowly turning it in. When the bike starts to stumble, turn it out a 1/4 of a turn. Now go for a ride.
Ride the bike around 5 miles. Do not shift hard between gears and do not go over 2500 RPM or 50 MPH. What you are doing is checking the intermediate jet. If when riding the bikes coughs and spits, then the intermediate jet is too big. If it stumbles, Like not getting enough gas, then its to small. Keep changing the jet until you stop the above problems. Everytime you change a jet always makes sure you re-adjust the air/fuel mixture screw.
Once the intermediate jet is set go to the main jet. Do the same as above, but ride over 3000 RPM. This will put the bike on the main jet.
Once all the above is done, now set the pumper. Start by turning it out about 1 turn and go for a ride. Ride down the road and shift hard between gears. If the bike stumbles between gears the open it up around 1/2 turn. Keep doing this until you stop the stumble.
Good luck and happy riding
