Motorcycle Repair: M/C kicking out of gear during up shifting, vulcan classic, tuneups

Question
I have a '98 Kawasaki 800 Vulcan classic that kicks out of second into neutral during up shifting. Sometimes it will shift into third but the shift lever does not seat the gear into third unless kicked up twice. Is this an adjustment issue or a worn part problem? 19,000 miles mostly commute street and freeway. This has been a consistant problem with no major repairs, and with regular tuneups.

Answer
Hi Robert.
If this is only happening in 2nd gear, then it could be a worn part, or (worst case) the shifter fork for that gear may be damaged and getting ready to break.

Get the bike to the shop and have a mechanic look at it, because if it is the latter of the problems, then it needs to be repair right away, before it becomes a major mechanical and safety issue.

Good luck.
