Motorcycle Repair: Electrical?, sportster 1200, wiring diagrams

Question
Hey Chris,
I have a stock 2001 Sportster 1200 Custom. Cold starts fine. Runs fine for hours. After reaching operating temp if I shut it down and restart no problem but after it sits for a few minutes it will not restart until it cools down. The reason is no spark at the plugs. Cause? Maybe you can tell me what to replace?  Thanks, Mitch

Answer
Hi Mitch.
Based on what you are saying, the bike turns over, but won't fire.
You may want to start by testing the ignition fuse and connections.  Then check the ignition wiring to see if it is grounding against the engine or other wiring anywhere.  Then you need to check the coils against what the specs are.  Check them cold and after you have reached the point where they fail.  The specs will be in the repair manual along with wiring diagrams.

Good luck.
