Motorcycle Repair: goldwing grips, dish soap, handgrips

Question
can't get stock handgrips off '84 goldwing. need to remove/replace to add vista cruise control.there seems to be something inside the handlebars that is holding them on. any advice is appreciated.

Answer
Hi Marc.
With extremely few exceptions, the grips on every bike out there are just held in place by a factory glue.  the only way to remove them will most likely destroy them.  If you can peel the grip off without destroying it, then re-installing it is no big trick.  Spray a mixture of water and dish soap on the handlebar and inside the grip, then slip it on and wait a few hours (preferably overnight).  The water evaporates leaving the soap to act as a strong glue (this method works for installing new grips too).

Good luck.
