Motorcycle Repair: 1982 yamaha starter problem, starter problem, starter motor

Chris, I have a 82 Yamaha that has a starter problem that I've been told is common to all 82's. The starter does not want to engage to start. There is suppose to be an "easy" fix for this but I don't know anyone around where I live to help.

 If this is a Virago, then yes, there is an easy fix.  it requires removal and disassembly of the starter motor.

You need to clean the contacts of the motor internally as well as the brushes.  That usually fixes the problem for a few months, at least.  Worst case, you may need new brushes.
