Motorcycle Repair: 1977 Honda GL 1000, honda gl 1000, ventilation problems

Question
Hi Bill,
I have a second hand Goldwing that loses power when going up hills.  The throttle will be wide open but seems like it is starving for fuel.
Most dealers here in Virginia won't work on it until late fall/winter due to it's age.  Any ideas?  They just did a complete tuneup last winter;
Thanks,  John

Answer
John, unless you have an electronic ignition conversion on the bike, I would definitely start with the ignition system. The points need to be cleaned and adjusted properly for accurate ignition timing, plus the mechanical spark advancer should be checked for proper function at the same time.
Other possibilities are fuel cap ventilation problems, causing vapor lock, restricted fuel filter, carburetors contaminated with water/debris/rust and defective air cut diaphragms (anti-backfire valves) to name a few.

Have the cam timing checked.... perhaps someone has changed the belts and missed the alignment marks by a tooth. These bikes do have fuel pumps, so check them for volume output, as well. The wing club sites should be able to help you out... GWs are not my strongest interest..
