Motorcycle Repair: 1985 Nighthawk 650 starved for fuel, nighthawk 650, water in the fuel

Question
I was riding my 1985 Nighthawk 650 the other day. I had stopped for about a half-hour after riding about 100 miles. After I began riding again, after about a mile, the engine began missing and died after about 20 seconds.

After I had pulled over to the side and waited about 10 seconds, it started right up again. I had no problems at all in another 50 miles of riding.

I remember that this also happened once last year. At that time, I had also just begun riding again after a stop. In both cases, it wasn't because I was low on fuel--it took only two gallons to top off the tank each time.

Any idea what is causing this? Thanks in advance, Ron

Answer
Hi Ron.
You may want to check for blockage in the float bowls, water in the fuel system and contaminants in the fuel.  If you haven't already, then install a good fuel filter in the fuel line.

Start there and see what you find.
Good luck.
