the car is sluggish and the service engine soon light came on 04 max ithink it could be the fuel filter

Hi Winston -

The first step is to take the car to a competent mechanic and get the engine code that is making the check engine light illuminate. There are many, many codes from various sensors throughout the engine that could cause this. Otherwise we will be chasing a rainbow. It is called an OBD II, and I think Autozone will do it for free.
