Nissan Repair: 1985 Nissan 300zx auto transmission problem, nissan 300zx, transmission work

Question
I have an automatic 1986 300zx, the guy I bought it from said that there was a plastic ring of some sort broken in the trans, but after all the other stuff he said about the car I don't really take it to heart. When I put it in park or neutral, it will stay, but it doesn't engage in drive, reverse, 1st, or 2nd, the shifter won't lock into any of them. I'm trying to figure out what it may be, I was thinking maybe transmission cable, but I really don't know much about transmission work.
thanks

Answer
Ty,

Sounds like the shifter linkage bushings need to be replaced.  I would first disassemble the shifter and examine the linkage.  Then, get the car up on jacks or a lift and inspect the linkage at the transmission.  The bushings are plastic and when they crack and fall out the shifter gets really loose.
