Nissan Repair: 1999 Nissan Maxima repair, nissan maxima, small screws

Question
An issue with my '99 Maxima is that we cannot add fuel to the tank. It has approx. 100k miles and recently while trying to pump fuel the gas pump automatically turns off as if the tank is full. If I try pumping the gas very slowly I'm able to get some fuel into the tank.  Our mechanic has tried checking everything he can think of but is now thinking that we should replace the gas tank.

Answer
Hi Susan -

Couple thoughts -

Have you tried different gas pumps? Sometimes the shut off mechanism is not working correctly (I used to work at a gas station for many years, and this is a common thing).

If not, then there has to be some kind of blockage in the fuel filler neck. You can remove this rather painlessly by going under the vehicle, and removing the rubber hose that connects the filler neck to the tank, and removing the 3 small screws that attach the filler neck to the body of the car. Perhaps some debris got stuck in there somehow.

Hope this helps -
