Question
QUESTION: Hi, when I turn wheels before I warm car it was squeaking. I checked steering fluid and it was very low. I added some but it seems to still be losing a little, can't see any leaks under car. what could be wrong and is it expensive to fix. only have 52000 miles,

ANSWER: Hi Diane -
If it is squeaking, looks like you have to tighten the power steering belt, or if it is frayed, replace it.

As for the leak, Normally a leak occurs on the high pressure side of the system, and only when you turn the wheel. Another way to find a leak is to inspect the components of the steering system for places where there is a lot of oil accumulation, such as the hoses, the rack, and even the pump. Have a helper turn the steering wheel while you look for this leak.

How much oil are you losing each week?

QUESTION: Thanks for the info. the oil only went down from max to low after 2 months. How much to fix.  steering doesn't squeak after oil is added

Answer
Hi Diane -

The oil leak is very slow, so it might be a challenge to find it. The 2 places that come to mind is the high pressure side steering hose, and the rack.

Get some brake cleaner and clean off the hose and rack. Then run the engine and have someone turn the wheel from side to side. Hopefully this will produce a visible wet spot, which would indicate the leak.

Let me know how this goes -
