Nissan Repair: 94 Merc Villager; shift problems, transmission failure, filter screen

Question
When shifting from park to drive or reverse, the trans seems to take awhile to make the transaction...and if you give it gas too soon, it 'clunks' into gear.  However, if you shift to '2' or '3' to take off, it goes fine.  Please advise.

Answer
Hi Den -

Assuming that the trans oil level is fine, it could be you have early signs of transmission failure. Sometimes changing the oil and filter screen helps, so I would do that first. There is a great additive called AT205 that I use for faiing transmissions, and I have had a tremendous success rate, even from "no shift" conditions -
Might want to try that one too. If all fails however, a trans overhaul is in your future.

Hope this helps
