Nissan Repair: Gas Gauge Floats, vent hoses, nissan stanza

Question
This only happens when my tank is at or below 1/4 tank on my 91 Nissan Stanza. But it will read one day at barely above E, but the next day, it will read at above 1/4 tank with no reason as to why. (Well unless gremlins are adding gas to my car, but I Doubt that highly) Anyways, At the same time, right after I refuel the car, i get a gas smell inside my car for about 20 minutes of driving, then its gone. Any ideas?

Answer
Aloha Robert -
Wouldn't that be nice, gremlins filling the tank, especially at the prices these days.

Anyway, look for a bad ground on the float. This will be at the top of the tank. Of course it also could be a defective float, which is in the tank, unfortunately. This is common, happened on my car as well.

As for the smell, while you have the tank down, inspect the overflow and vent hoses for the fuel tank. Any crack will cause smells to enter the vehicle.

Hope this helps -
