Nissan Repair: 86 Nissan D21 V6 3.0 Hardbody Tachometer, nissan d21, volt ohm meter

Question
I've had this truck for about a year now and the Tach has not worked since I bought the truck. The tach is factory and not an after market tach. I haven't been able to find any info on how to trouble shoot why it doesn't work.

I would rather rule out any other problems with the tach before I buy a new one, only to find out it was something else.

Can you tell me if my tachometer is cable driven or electrically controlled? Also if you know of any manuals with an electrical diagram that might help me out I would greatly appreciate your help.

Answer
Marcus the tach is electronic and if it is not working I would first get a Haynes Manual for the wiring diagram.  Then, remove the cluster and backprobe the harness with a volt ohm meter to see if the tach is gerring signal.  It probably is and if that is the case go get one from a wrecking yard.  New is going to be too much money.
