Nissan Repair: car wont start, r32 gtst, nissan r32

Question
Hi Calvin,
I own a Nissan R32 gtst. For some time the car has been idling irractically. Up a couple of hundred rpm and dwon a couple of hundred rpm. Then one day I jumped in to start it and it won't start. Can you assist please?
If it's the fuel pump how easy is it to change and is there any safety precautions to take?

Many Thanks

Wayne.

Answer
Cars do not start for 2 reasons, no spark, or no gas.

To check spark, remove one spark plug wire and insert a screwdriver so it wedges against the metal terminal inside. Hold the screwdriver about 1/4" away from any metal surface of the vehicle while someone turns the engine. There should be a spark jumping between the screwdriver and metal surface. BE CAREFUL not to touch any metal surface while you do this please! If there is no spark, I would replace the ignition module and check the distributor cap and rotor.

Check the fuel delivery. Loosen the fuel line where it connects to the injector rack (do not have to remove it). Turn the ignition on momentarily and there should be a good amount of fuel leaking out. If not, then check the fuel pump or fuse. The fuel pump is located in your gas tank. The hardest part about that is removing your tank. Ensure it has less than 1/4 tank of gas, otherwise it will be too heavy. Once the tank is out, remove the ring where the hoses come out from and then the fuel pump assembly can be removed. Precautions are obviously not to use any kind of metal chisel or punch to loosen the ring. Use a brass punch.

Hope this helps -
