Nissan Repair: Blown converter, metal shavings, torque converter

Question
QUESTION: With a blown torque converter, am I able to just change it with a new one without replacing the tranny? Is a tranny rebuild necessary with new converter?

ANSWER: Rick,

In a perfect world, if the vehicle was turned off immediately after it blew there would be a chance.  But, the pan should be dropped to make sure there is no metal shavings from the occurance.  Basically, it is a risk to just change the converter since it usually showers the rest of the transmission with metal parts screwing the rest of the transmission up.  But, if you have the time and money want to attempt it the choice is yours.

QUESTION: I have pulled the pan off and there were no shavings present. Also like I said before there is no odd sound when I put the vehile into and gear, No movement but also no grinding, pinging, or anything. Even when the motor is reved no sound from the tranny. Someone mentioned to me that it might it be something with the bands? What is meant by that? And is that a possibility? What is involved in correcting that if thats what the issue might be?

Answer
Rick,

For the transmission to have no gears in forward or reverse there are only a few things that can cause this.  First, a blown converter, a blown pump or the diverter valve is stuck open.  But, even stuck open it would be the pump or the converter.  Now, since you say it will roll out of park lets me know that the shifter is not broken.  And, by this I mean the one in the transmission that moves the valve body shift valve.  So, it should be the converter or the pump.
