Nissan Repair: air bag light flashing, speciality shop, air bag

Von, I have a 97 Pathfinder. I get a flashing red "AIR BAG" light on my dash whenever I start the vehicle. The light continues to flash until I turn it off. Don't want to go through any great diagnostic expense...any suggestions? Thanks.

The airbag computer does a self test every time you start the car.  There is problem and the airbags will not deploy since the computer cannot recognize the problem.  Basically, the car goes into a fail safe mode.  I would disconnect the battery for about five minutes and reconnect it.  If the light stays out you are ahead of the game.  If not you are looking at taking it to a dealer or a Nissan speciality shop that has the code reader that works on Nissan airbags.  Remember that there is great liability in working on airbags so not too many people do the work.
