Nissan Repair: 1994 Nissan Altima, jumper cables, nissan altima

Question
My son left his lights on all day while at school.  One of his friends offered to jump start it for him but unfortunately did not make sure the jumper cables were correctly attached and the negative cable was put on the positive/positive put on the negative.  I am not sure how long they left it on exactly but they say it wasn't more than a minute.  My husband looked at the fuses and found the main fuse blown which he replaced -- after, when they opened the door, the lights flashed and the car alarm went off.  This morning the car alarm didn't go off when we opened the door and when we tried to start the car it did turn over (sluggishly) but did not start.  I am reluctant to try to jump it again before checking with an expert because I don't want to make a bad mistake, worse.  Thank you for your advice!

Answer
Hi Denise -

Happens all the time -

OK, first of all, you may jump it, obviously ensure that the proper terminals match on each car.

the alarms go off because the battery is weak. Take the battery to get it recharged, or if it is 2 years old - replace it. One thing I worry about is the alternator. That must be checkd if it is charging the battery. Also check the large circuit fuses. It should be in a box near the battery (30 - 50 amps).

Hope this helps Denise -
