Nissan Repair: 2001 Maxima Manual Transmission, nissian maxima, manuel transmission

Question
I own a 2001 Nissian Maxima w/ a Manuel Transmission w/ roughly 115k. As I was driving, I heard the craziest sound. It sounded like I was draging a tree branch. I pulled over and confirmed that I wasn't. But I noticed that Black liquid that looked like oil, was leaking from the transmission. I was still able to drive the car, but I got it home right away. I'm wondering if my entire trans. has to be replaced, or is it a gasket or a cracked case...? Have you ever heard of this?

Answer
Hello -

I would need a little more information. You did not say what part of the transmission was leaking, but I would check the casing for cracks. Sounds like the input shaft or gears failed, possibly breaking through the casing. My Ford Explorer went through the same deal. Required a trans overhaul. But perhaps not in your case.

I would not drive it any more until you confirm it is the transmission. Check the oil and also as mentioned before, the entire housing for breaks or cracks.

Hope this helps
