Nissan Repair: Power Steering, power steering fluid, competent mechanic

Question
When I start my 1996 Nissan it squeals like crazy in this cold weather and it is getting worse. Its about the power steering. When its done squealing, give it a min or two and I can easily turn the wheel. Where do I put in power steering fluid or is it part of the transmission system. In which I dont add anything but transmission fluid.
Thanks for you help.
Melissa

Answer
Hi Melissa -

The squealing is caused by a loose belt. Have it tightened by a competent mechanic. If it has been squealing for a while, I would suggest replacement, and replacement of all the other belts. If I am not mistaken, you have a alternator belt and an A/C belt if you have A/C in your car, in addition to the power steering belt.

The transmission is not part of the steering system. The steering fluid is filled directly at the pump, which should be somewhere in the left rear (lower part) of the engine compartment as you face the car from the front. However, your noise is caused by a loose belt, and not low fluid. If the fluid was low, the sound would be a low groaning sound.

Hope this helps, Melissa -
