Nissan Repair: Alternator Problem, defective alternator, nissan pickup

Question
Hey, I have a 1991 Nissan Pickup, 2.4 liter engine.  The alternator light comes on, either dimly or 100% lit, but also the E-Brake light seems to come on, despite the fact the E-Brake IS off.  The lights don't dim in the truck though, and it seems to start okay.  As I drove it, it seemed the alternator light would get a lot dimmer, but also the E-brake light would flicker on/off, even though the E-brake is off, and this has never happened before.  When I came to a stop though, the light would progressively get brighter, then when I went to take off from the stop, it would get dim again.  Is there any way to check the alternator myself without having to bring it somewhere?  Also, what would be your overall diagnostic of this problem as well, with the E-Brake light and whatnot?  Thank you!

Answer
Richard,

On a Nissan you have just diagnosed a defective alternator.  The brake light does come on with the alternator light.  Strange as it seems the alternator is causing the problem.  You could go to Autozone or Checker and they will perform a system check for free.  Plus, both have great rebuilt alternators.
