Nissan Repair: 88 pulsar running rough, head gasket leak, fuel pressure regulator

Question
I noticed when i took the car over 4000 rpm whitish smoke was coming out the exhaust,I thought it might have been from the cleaner i sprayed in through the butterfly valve?
I havent driven it since[not insured]
replaced injectors,plugs
when i bought it the 3 rd cylinder was lower in compression than the others [i think by 65 psi ?]

would you rule out a head gasket leak with these conditions?
Thanks

-----Question-----
Hi,I have a 1988 16 valve automatic Pulsar.
My car sounds like it is running to rich? when i give it gas it runs rough and then i hold it steady at one rpm it seems okay, then when i let off the gas it backfires.

Its kind of like driving with the choke on
i have changed the plugs,o2 sensor[had a elec 4 wire one on ,was wrong one]
Any assistance is greatly appreciated

Brock,

Check for codes first.  Does the check engine light come on?  Second, check the fuel pressure regulator as it sounds like it is broken or the vacuum line to it is cracked of has come off.  That would cause the rich condition.  Email me back with what you find and if there are any codes.

Brock,

Follow the fuel lines to the intake and look for the return line.  That is the one that does not have a fuel filter on it.  The one with a fuel filter is the pressure line that goes to the engine.  Now, look for the fuel rail that the fuel lines connect to.  On one end there will be a diaphram with a vacuum line on it and that is the pressure regulator.  Check the fuel pressure with and without the vacuum line on.  There should be about a 8 pound increase with the line off.  If there is no change or it is out of range replace the regulator.

Brock,

A fuel filter would do it as that restricts the flow of gas so that is great that you have the problem solved.

Brock,

If it was me I would do a complete tuneup with new plugs, cap, and rotor along with wires.  Then clean the throttle body.

Brock,

If the car is not eating antifreeze and putting steam out the exhaust pipe you should be ok.  You could do a compression check to be sure that things are in order and there is a check for exhaust gas in antifreeze.  Parts store sells a kit to check for this to make sure you do not ahve a small headgasket leak or cracked head.

Answer
Brock,

It does sound like a headgasket.  Check the compression again.  And, check the spark plug for the number 3 if it was low.  That is probably the one where the headgasket is leaking.  You can purchase a kit to check for exhaust gas in the antifreeze at the parts store.  It is a liquid and a bellows.  Basically you put the fluid in the jar and put the cone over the radiator opening and siphon air from the radiator into the fluid.  If it changes color you know for sure.
