Nissan Repair: AC Compressor Noise - bad clutch??, center bolt, compressor clutch

Question
hello - I have a '99 Maxima with the Calsonic V6 AC compressor. There is a howling/screeching noise coming from it when the AC is off (that is, when the climate control is switched to manual). when I turn the AC on (to "auto" or turn on the defrost) the noise goes away. is this the compressor clutch, or the clutch bearing? or something else? can I replace just the clutch/bearing? thanks!!

Answer
Joel,

It is probably a combination between the clutch and pulley bearing.  You can get a clutch kit that comes with the pulley with the bearing already installed and a new clutch.  An easy replacement and you do not need to evacuate the system so it is easy to replace.  Snap ring plyers and a socket to remove the center bolt.  If it was me I would do the repair ASAP.  Run it with the air on until you do or you risk taking out the compressor and the belt and if it breaks you might damage something else under the hood.
