Question
hi i own a 1987 300zx and my idle is running about 500rpm/min and my dad thinks its running low.  when the car is cold or you start it when the engine is cold it will stall but after that it is fine.  what is the problem and what do i need to do to fix it.

Answer
Looks dismal, I mean the Sox's chances! LOL That was so great in 04.

Idle up control solenoid:

The electronic control unit prevents rough idle by sensing idle condition and transmitting a corresponding signal to the idle-up solenoid. On 200SX models, the solenoid is actuated when battery voltage is less than 12 volts, air flow meter is malfunctioning, or load signal is on with engine speed less than 1500 RPM. On 300ZX and 1985 and 1987-88 Maxima models, the solenoid is actuated when headlamp switch, cooling fan switch and/or rear defogger and power steering oil pressure switch is on, when battery voltage is less than 12 volts, during engine start and for 20 seconds after engine start. On 1986 Maxima models, the solenoid is also activated when the rear defogger switch and/or A/C switch is on and when engine speed is greater than 1300 RPM with the idle switch on. This device is on the Fast Idle Control Device (FICD) located mid point on the drivers side of the engine.

Auxillary Air Valve:

The air regulator, Fig. 20, bypasses the throttle valve to control the quantity of air for increasing the engine idling speed when starting the engine at an underhood temperature of below 176°F.
A bi-metal and a heater are incorporated into the air regulator. When the ignition switch is turned to the ``Start'' position or when the engine is running, electric current flows through the heater, and the bi-metal, as it is heated by the heater, begins to move and closes the air passage in a few minutes. The air passage remains closed until the engine is stopped and the underhood air temperature drops below 176°F. Located next to the FICD.

This is about all I know on this car. I used to have one back in the day, but never had trouble with it. Hope this helps.
