Nissan Repair: Altima 1998, canister purge valve, charcoal canister

Question
I ahve a check engine light on  but car is running good.  It has 135,000 miles on it. The codes ar P1448 and P0440. Also, Is it possible to turn light off myself.  Thanks Eric

Answer
Eric,

Disconnect the battery and you will clear the codes.  But, you should want to correct the problem first.  P0440 is evaporative system problem and that is probably a loose gas cap unless you have a vapor line that is rotted out or a loose clamp to the fuel tank or canister purge system.  P1448 is the vent control valve that is on the charcoal canister and it is related to the first code.  Now, you could have something as simple as trying to overfill your tank or a loose or defective gas cap.  Reset the codes after checking the cap and the hoses.  If it comes back replace the canister purge valve on the charcoal canster.  Also, Autozone, Checker or the like can turn off the codes if you do not want to disconnect the battery for a five minutes to clear the codes yourself.
