Nissan Repair: 1996 Nissan Altima Timing Chains, nissan altima, timing chains

Question
I have a custommer with a Nissan Altima, a 1996, and he thinks the timing chain has broken. I thought all of these cars had timing belts?
Also, either way, isn't this engine what they call an "interference motor"?

Answer
Mike,

This one has a timing chain.  Check it out in the normal way.  Crank it over and you will hear the out of mechanical timing and grinding.  Usually, it requires a new chain, chain guide adn tensioner when they fail.  I have seen where the timing cover has to be replaced since the chain sawed a hole in it.  Unless the engine was spinning in the outer limits the valves should be fine.
