Nissan Repair: fuel gauge, nissan altima, fuel gauge

Question
I have a 1997 Nissan Altima GXE.  I had a front-end "fender bender" a year and a half ago.  For the past four-six months, my fuel gauge has been showing mixed readings.  In other words, I really don't how much gas I have in my car.  What can I, possibly, do to try and fix it or do I, simply, need to take my car in to the dealer to have them fix it?  Also, how much will this cost?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Kiambe,

Your car probably needs a fuel sending unit.  This is in the gas tank.  If you do it yourself you could take the gas tank down and ground the wire to the frame for the sender and if the gauge goes to full then you know it is the sender.  If it does not then you will need to replace the gauge.  Most of the time it is the sending unit.
