Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 1994 Buick Park Avenue, buick park avenue, gasket maker

Question
QUESTION: Hello Tom,
I own a base model (non supercharged) 94' Park Avenue with the 3800 engine. I am going to replace the intake manifold gaskets and the valve cover gaskets in the near future. My question is which threadlock sealant (red, blue, etc...) do I need to use on the bolts before re-assembling the parts and is it different for each part or the same for both? Thanks for your time.

ANSWER: HI RENNIE,IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE A THREAD SEALER FOR THE INTAKE BOLTS I WOULD USE PERMATEX THREAD SEALER. ASK FOR IT BY NAME.PUT THIS ON THE THREADS JUST BEFORE INSTALLING THE BOLTS..I WOULD ALSO USE A DAB OF PERMATEX FORM A GASKET [BLACK] AROUND THE CORNERS OF THE INTAKE GASKET TO HEAD AREA'S..TO MAKE SURE THERE IS A GOOD SEAL.. MAKE SURE YOU CLEAN ALL THE BOLT THREADS[WIRE WHEEL WORKS GOOD FOR THIS] OFF REAL GOOD BEFORE USING THE THREAD SEALER TO GET CORRECT TORQUE SPEC SETTINGS. NO OTHER SEALER IS NEEDED ON ANY OF THE OTHER BOLTS. .HOPE THIS HELPS YOU AND IF YOU NEED MORE INFO GET BACK TO ME.GOOD LUCK TO YOU,,,, TOM..

QUESTION: Thanks Tom. Just to clarify, use the same Permatex thread sealer on both the intake manifold and valve cover bolts correct?

Answer
HI RENNIE,NO,THREAD SEALER IS JUST FOR THE BOLT THREADS ALONG THE INTAKE MANIFOLD..NOTHING ELSE.
THIS SEALS THE BOLT HOLES SO NOT COOLANT GOES UP THE BOLT..THE PERMATEX GASKET MAKER[RTV] IS TO SEAL THE GASKETS IF AND WHERE NEEDED. I WOULD SAY JUST AROUND THE CORNERS OF THE MANIFOLD AND HEAD AREA..THESE GASKETS ARE REALLY GOOD...YOU SHOULD NOT NEED ANY SEALER AROUND THE VALVE COVER GASKETS EITHER. LET ME KNOW HOW IT GOES..TOM...
