Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: Transmission Just Starting To Slip..., low gears, salvage yard

Question
Hi Van: First, thanks for answering my question.

I own a 1991 Buick LeSabre 3.8 w/automatic transmission. Just this week, after 40,000 miles these past two years, I started to encounter my transmission slipping at low speeds. I also noticed a slight "hiccup" at 55 mph w/the trans.

I've changed the transmission fluids religiously for $100 each time (done three times).

Van, the engine has 188,000 miles and still doesn't burn oil. I change the oil every 3,000 miles.

I'm asking your advice; do I get the transmission completely rebuilt, or do I go to a junkyard to p/u a tranny?

If I get the tranny rebuilt, do I have it done for the low gears or completely have it redone?

What would be the approximate cost of rebuilding? Do you think I should go to Aamco, Lee Myles or a national trans repair shop, or would a local, reputable tranny repair shop do just as well?

Thanks for your prompt reply, Van. All the very best! Terence Sutherland

Answer
I did a salvage yard job several years ago, and ended up with a tranny that had been recently professionally rebuilt, and I had great luck with it.
But as much as you drive it, I would want to have a real good idea what it came out of, and why the vehicle was in the salvage yard.
I would be tempted to use the local reputable tranny shop, but the national shops might have a factory rebuilt unit with a warranty and a new torque converter cheaper than you can have it overhauled.
