Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: !989 Olds Dying, 3800 engine, egr valve

Question
A friend has a 1989 Olds 88 with a 3800 engine that he says when he hears the EGR valve start clicking the engine dies on him. He has had it to several different repairs shops and no one has been able to fix it as of yet. He has told me that it can run for hours and be fine but once that clicking starts it dies. Any Suggestions?

Answer
Without actually performing some diagnostic test procedues myself, I would disconnect the EGR CONTROLLER when this clicking starts and see if the vehicle continues to run OK. You may encounter a CHECK ENGINE light due to the disconnected controller but see if this solves the problem.
