Pontiac Repair: Rear Engine Oil Seal Leaking, engine oil additive, jeep cherokee sport

Question
Hi Todd,
Was told today I have a rear seal engine oil leak on my 93 Jeep Cherokee Sport automatic, 4X4-4.0 Liter engine and was quoted $250.00 to have fixed. He has to pull the transmission. It's gonna be about 2 months due to budget before I can afford to fix it. It's my only vehicle but luckily I don't have to drive it too far to work. Is there any additive I might add or anything I can do to keep a major leak-out from ocurring until I can afford to fix it? I was using Castrol High Mileage and it leaked about a quart a week. Then went to Autozone 10/W/40 and now it leaks about 2 quarts. Thanks..Mark"
P.S. I have opted to keep this message private in case you might recommend something that some people might consider untested or unproven and it might reflect back upon you, although you may have seen from experience it works sometimes. For example, like a doctor recommending an olive oil and lemon juice purge for gallstones but it might not bode well among his peers. Thank you for understanding.

Answer
Hi Mark:

Well I'm not a jeep guy but this is a general question none the less. Here goes. If you can't afford to get it fixed yuou can try a bad aid but ig it's a rear main oil seal leaking that's not good it holds back engine oil presure and they can leak quite a lot in a short period of time as you have found out. continue to use High milage oil they have additives in them to help swell the rubber on the seals. Try an engine oil additive that states helps reduce oil leaking and or burning It has more dditives in it to swell the seals more. Use that only 1 time and keep using the high milage oil. Auto zone and advance has a whole shelf of "mechanic" in a can quick fix magic potion stuff it's hit or miss if it works.I don't know if one works any better then another and I don't recommend using them but if funds are low to fix it any port in a storm that works is good I guess. Just keep an eye on the oil level so you don't run it to low and damage the engine. Good luck :0
