Pontiac Repair: Buick transmission, buick regal, usa summer

Question
Hello,
We have a 2003 Buick Regal with 185,000 miles.  We plan to keep the car for about another 100,000 miles.  The transmission at this point has not given us any problem.  We plan to drive across the USA Summer 2010.  Should we get the transmission re-built now?  We know that transmissions typically don't last past 200,000 miles...we don't want it to break down on this trip.  What's your advice?  Thanks...

Answer
Hi Judy:

I would not suggest a rebuild unless it needs it. if you have done regular maintence on this up to this point then keep up with it. It may neot be a bad idea to have the filter changed and the fluid flushed out. If when the filter is changed ther is excessive material in the oil pan then I would suggest having it gone through and rebuilt but not unless that is is present when the pan is removed. The transmission in that car is a pretty good meaning designed well and if you made it this far you got one that was also built well. Good luck :)
