Pontiac Repair: smoking, coolant leak, cold mark

Question
QUESTION: My car was overheating then got the thermostat replaced. The check engine, ets and oil light were on...i put 10w30 but the car starts smoking....

ANSWER: Hi chrissy:

What model car is this and what engine is in it? By the sounds of it it doesn't seem good. What color is the smoke coming out of the tail pipe? blue or white? either way it's not good. You may have overheated the engine bad enough to cause some damage. which oil light was on low oil level or the red warning light?

QUESTION: its a 97 pontiac grand am....the smoke was white coming out of the hood...it looked like steam...the warning light was on...

Answer
If it was steam from under the hood you have/had some sort of a coolant leak. The service engine light was more then likely because the engine ran hot. how is it now. Is it running hot now? if not and the steam/smoke stopped you should be okay make sure the radaitor surge tank on the right fender is ful of coolant to the cold mark. never open the tank up with the car hot. good luck :)
