Pontiac Repair: 1965 bonne 389 tri help.........., throttle linkage, pump tank

Question
Hello.....I have a 1965 bonneville coupe 389 tri-power, the engine turns but will not start right up. I prime the carbs with a little gas and she fires right up and keeps running but when i turn off the bonne and try to restart her, she just turns and turns. Once again i have to prime her with a little gas and she fires right up. Does this sound like a fuel pump issue????? Your help would be greatly appreciated

Answer
Wow Philip that car is older than I am.... Umm it could be a fuel pump issue where for some reason the pump is loosing it prime back to the tank or that the fuel is running back the feed pipe back into the pump/tank. It doesn't make much scene because the carbs have a bowl where the fuel is stored I have only seen one of these 1 time and the middle carb was for idle and the 2 outer ones were for acceleration and wide open throttle.. You may have an issue where the car bowl it's self runs dry and once the engine starts up the fuel pump is running fast enough to fill it back up again.. when it will not start does it seem like it's flooded or does it just run like it's out of gas? There maybe something going on with the choke and it's not working on a cold start and by putting fule into the engine you basically are making it run richer without the aid of a choke.. When it will not start take a look done the top of the carobs and work the throttle linkage you should be able to see the accelerator pump dumping the fuel into the bores. If you don't see anything then it's either out of fuel or there is a issue with the carob(S) them self's. Sorry I can't be of much more help but like I said this is an oldie.. For gods sake my parents were not even married back in 1965. Oh and by the way dumping fule into the carbs is not really very safe I'd hate to see you loose this old car because it backfires and ignites the fuel you dumped in there and burn this car up.......
