Pontiac Repair: starters/alternative starting methods, 1986 pontiac 6000, starter solenoid

Question
I own a 1986 Pontiac 6000, 4 cylinder. This morning it wouldn't start. It tried to turn over, then made a quick clicking noise. I believe that means the starter is bad, correct?
My question is: I know there is other ways to start the car besides replacing the starter, for awhile anyway. How is this done? I remember friends using a screwdriver to start their cars---how is this done?
    Thanks!

Answer
It could be your battery, not the starter.
The way that you are asking about with a screwdriver only works if you have a bad  starter solenoid, which you dont.
Check the battery 1st if it is ok then you need a starter.
If the battery is bad or just dead, check the alternator.
