Porsche Repair: Alternator Problems, air flow sensor, screw post

Question
Dave,  My question is,  I put a new alternator on my 1981 928 and a new battery and its still not charging,  I have 2 large wires that go on the same screw post and a small green wire that goes on a small post on the alternator,  could it be that the green wire is a ground wire and it may have a break in it? also,  After driving it today,  my catalic converter turn cheery red hot and I was wondering could this be the cause of my car not to idle correctly, I ve replaced the air flow sensor, new plugs, new 02 sensor, please help me with this problem.   Greg

Answer
Hi Greg,

If you trace that green wire you'll find it is not a ground wire, but that it travels to your voltage regulator (http://www.prestolite.com/pgs_training/training_3.php).  This is also a likely culprit when the alternator doesn't seem to want to charge.
