Question -
Hi - I have a '95 Rexair with a Ford 460 (54K miles). Recently had overheating issues with tranny so installed a new deeper cooling pan, larger cooler w/fan, and a temp gauge. After install, had an engine issue (not sure is assocaited). It starts fine, revs great, oil pressure and charging is good. But the thing will not idle. When I let up on the throttle, it dies. I also noticed that the tach does not work any longer, and also noticed that for some reason the gas gauge goes to empty once the ignition is turned on. With key off, the gauge registers the 1/4 tank that there is. Any ideas?

Hi Darwin:

First off, I have a few questions for you. Did you have any electrical or engine problems before you installed the transmission upgrades, pan, fan, etc.? Its seems a bit odd that all the problems started as a result of the upgrades you did. When you installed the power for the oil cooler fan motor, where did you get your 12 volt power supply from?

All of these issues sure seem odd, but I will do all I can to assist you. I will be awaiting your reply.

Larry,

I am thinking that the idle and the dash (tach/fuel gauge) are not related. I checked behind the cluster and the signal is reaching the cluster for the tach and fuel gauge, however the gauge is not working. I am guessing that while working in the fuse block, something may have blown a diode or something in the cluster panel. I will tackle this at a later date once the main issue is resolved. I guess my biggest concern is the idle issue. It will not idle - as soon as I let up on the gas, it dies.

Hi Darwin:

Glad to hear you have made progress on wiring problems. I too think you are on the right track.

As for the idle problem, you may want to check out the electronic idle control. Im not sure where the one on your rv is located, but Ive had the same problem on my jeep and my pace arrow with chevy chasis. If you have an auto zone or other major auto parts chain nearby, usually they will plug in their computer error code tester, and bring up the codes, which will usually point you in the right direction as to what your problems are.  Of all the problems electronics can sometimes plague us with, the computer code readout feature is great, although not 100% accurate with all the problems it can diagnose. Hope this information will help. It too might give you the error code for your tach. problem. Would certainly be worth a try.
If I can be of further assistance, please let me know. I forgot to ask you an important question. When you were connecting the initial wiring, did you accidently short anything out, or cause any thing to generate a spark, etc. If so, please tell me about what happened. Thanks Larry
