what would be the easy way to make sure the fuel pump is bad?

Put a fuel pressure gauge on it would be the best way. Or get a partner and crank the engine over while he slaps the bottom of the tank. Often this can get a car started that has a bad fuel pump. This is temporary and it should stall out again quickly
