Question
how do i replace the governor gear on a 445 john deere. the gear is located on the front cover? Thanks A lot!

Answer
Do you have the Kawasaki FD620D engine?  If so, you can find the engine service manual using the URL below:

According the manual (pg 2-6), to replace governor assembly, which contains the gear, you need to split the engine crankcase.  This is pretty standard for most mechanical governors on small engines.

Have you ever overhauled and engine?  To get to the gear you need to split the crankcase.  This will require several special tools for re-assembly and will require a many gaskets and new oil seals. You need a gasket set...about $120.00.

Gasket set on Ebay:

Is the gear broke?
