Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs & Stratton Pro Classic 3500 watt generator, briggs stratton, spark plug wire

Question
Hi. I have a Briggs Pro Classic 3500 Watt generator with an Intek 206 engine (the engine cover has the numbers 121312 and also 031027 PE stamped on it). Try as I may I cannot start the engine. The fuel is fresh and as far as I can see the carburetor is not blocked or damaged. I removed the spark plug and held against earth whilst pulling the starter cord but I could not detect a spark. The magnetron unit and spark plug wire appear to be in good condition. Also I have fitted a new spark plug. I am wondering whether the low oil engine shutdown device is faulty but I don't know how it works exactly or how to test it. Can you shed any light on this? Also, in re-assembling the engine pull start casing I forgot to make a note of which of the 3 wires (white, black and red earth) go to which terminal on the On/Off switch. Do you have a diagram? Looking forward to hearing from you.

Answer
Hello David Rollin:

>>Disconnect the Oil Sensor Lead/s and Check for Fire at the Spark Plug.
>>If the Plug is Now Firing, then the Oil Sending Unit Requires Replacing. If No Fire at the Plug, then Reconnect the Oil Sensor Leads and then Check the Coil
>>The Following is a Basic Instruction File I Made for Checking the Coil/Ign Coil/Magnetron/Armature on Small Engines. Any Input is Appreciated.
>>**To Check the Ign Coil; Remove the Spark Plug/s.
>>With a Good Plug, Wrap a Wire Around the Threads of the Plug and Attach the Other End of the Wire to the Engine Block.
>>Remove the Blower Housing (metal engine cover). The Wire that is Connected to the Coil/Ign Module from the Shut Off Switch needs to be Removed (unplugged) from the Coil/Ign Module.
>>Now Check for Spark at the Plug.
>>If Spark, then the Shut Off Switch or the Wire is Bad.
>>If Still No Spark, then the Coil/Ign Module is Bad. If there are Safety Switches on this Unit and the Coil is Good; you Need to Check the Safety Switches for Being Bad and Check the Oil Guard Switch also.**
>>Send me the Model Numbers Off the Unit, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you.
>>They are Located on the inner side of the frame, next to the engine.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I Hope to be Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
