Does it really matter? There is an oil hole in the cap. It looks like simply splash to me.

AnswerI believe you are talking about a Kohler K301, NOT a 103 correct? This is a straight rod correct? I just tried to find my book on that engine, didn't find it, but found the counter gear alignment tool! Its been years since i worked on one of these!
It is simply a splash system. The rod cap should fit on easier one way then the other. Put it on and torque to specs. Carefully turn it over by hand, if it turns freely you should be good to go.
