Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler 12 HP K103 Spec. 47723D, oldies but goodies, alignment tool

Question
I know she is past 30 but so am I. I want to do a quality rebuild. But:
I put in a new piston and ring set. All looking good. But:
I never marked the orientation of the rod big end. Now I can't figure out how it goes. The book I have says it should be notched, both the rod and cap. But mine ain't...
Does it really matter? There is an oil hole in the cap. It looks like simply splash to me.
It would break my heart if I get it wrong. And if it failed...

Answer
I believe you are talking about a Kohler K301, NOT a 103 correct?  This is a straight rod correct?  I just tried to find my book on that engine, didn't find it, but found the counter gear alignment tool!  Its been years since i worked on one of these!

It is simply a splash system.  The rod cap should fit on easier one way then the other.  Put it on and torque to specs.  Carefully turn it over by hand, if it turns freely you should be good to go.

they are oldies, but goodies!  HEAVY too!

Have fun!
