Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere GT235 mower, john deere gt235, piston ring

Question
I have a 4-5 year old GT235 riding mower and it stopped working running. When I try do start it it blows black smoke from the exhaust and there is oil coming out of the exhaust pipe when I try to start it for an extended period of time. It sounds to like it might have blown a piston ring or something. Is is worth rebuilding, replacing the motor completely or just buy a new complete mower.

Answer
Hi Dan
Before you give up the ship let's check a couple of things. First, check the oil level to make sure it is not overfilled. An overfilled crankcase will cause oil to come out the exhaust. Black smoke usually indicates a flooding problem which could be a sticking float. Be sure and check your plug to make sure it is not oil fouled.
Hope this helps/
