Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman LT1000 cranks but wont start., craftsman lt1000, craftsman model

Question
I just bought it and has been sitting for a long time, it is new condition. I put new oil, fuel, oil filter, spark plug, battery is dead so I jump started. I cleand the carb. because it was letting gas thru now it does, then I sprayed starting fluid into the carb and the engine starts and it dies. the engine is a Kohler Commander 16HP model CV460S. The tractor is Craftsman model #917.272056. I got the engine service and user manual online.

Answer
First don't jumpstart your engine eventually you will damage the ignition coils.  If the battery is effective replace it be sure that the battery is charged and read 12.6 V DC.  The first thing you should do is remove the carburetor and flush the entire fuel system flush the tank and then back flush the tank or the fuel comes out replace fuel lines and fuel filter.  Remove the carburetor disassemble it and cleaned every air and fuel passage with a wire from a wire tie and blowout with carburetor cleaner and compressed air.  Purchase a carburetor kit and new mounting gaskets from your dealer install the carburetor kit per instructions and reattach using new mounting gaskets.  Install new fuel lines and filter reattach throttle and choke cables then remove the crankcase breeder and clean it if needed.  If the engine has that for a very long period of time it would be prudent to replace the head gasket also.  Be sure the crankcase has no air leaks at the dipstick or oil filled to and at the crankcase gasket.  I think if you follow these instructions you should resolve your issue.  Please contact us if you are in need of further assistance.
