Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Chainsaw wont stay running?, exhaust port, spark arrestor

Question
I bought a used chainsaw for $20 but it wont stay running. I replaced the fuel lines, cleaned the carb. , put fresh gas in.  When i put the cord it will start on idle then dies immediately. It wont start at all with the throttle in. Whats wrong i think its the mixture but when i cut back it wont start. What do you think?

Answer
Hello Matt:

Did you Check the Exhaust Port? The Following is a Basic Instruction File for Doing a Diagnostic on the Engine for this Problem. Any Input is Appreciated. **Remove the Muffler and Make Sure the Exhaust Port is Clear. If it is, then Try to Start the engine with the Muffler Off. If it Starts and Runs Properly, then Clean the Spark Arrestor Screen in the Muffler or Replace the Muffler if Required. If the Exhaust Port or Muffler are Restricted you will have the Problem you Described. If the Exhaust Port and Muffler are Clear, then Check the Carburetor Metering Needle. If Set Incorrectly you will have this Problem. For Better Assistance Send me the Model Numbers Off the Unit, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. I Require the OEM (Walbro, Zama, ect) and the Model Numbers Off the Carburetor. With these I can Locate a Breakdown of the Carburetor and Better Assist you. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
