Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): GX160, valve clearance, speed sound

Question
QUESTION: Okay so i checked the valve clearance and everything was good. I got bored and figured i would take the head off and look at the valves so i cleaned everything up and put the head back on and it was wanting to fire and everything for once. So i went back out there today and pulled it again and it wouldnt fire again so is their anyway that it is like out of time? i messed with the governor awhile back but i didnt know if that would have done anything

ANSWER: I have heard of them jumping time but this is pretty rare.  Did the engine run before you adjusted the governor?

Are you familar with valve overlap?  Checking for overlap at TDC is a very good indicator that the timing is still correct.
Let me know.

QUESTION: Well i pulled the crankcase off and sure enough somehow it jumped time. I put it back to how it was sapose to be and put it back together and sure enough it fired right up. Thanks for all the help i really appreciate it

Answer
WOW!  Pretty rare they jump time but it could happen if the engine ran too fast.  The valve over-lap is somewhat challenging to describe but a really old mechanic showed me how to check and more important why to check for over-lap.  This really helps to quickly to diagnose mechanical timing issues.

Glad to hear you got is running.  Does the engine speed sound normal, not too slow and not too fast?
