Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): engine rebuild B&S 8 hp `190707, inch pound torque wrench, small outboards

Question
Eric, I want to rebuild this engine and was wondering what how to book would be best. I've been doing small outboards with success following book advice any tirles you could recommend before I get started. Paul

Answer
For the money, the Briggs and Stratton L Head repair manual (part number 270962) is a decent manual.  I am probably somewhat biased because I have spent so much time using the manual.  I have seen these as low as $10.00.

Chilton's aren't bad but they usually are a more general but do contain a some good tips once in a while.

If you live in or near a large city check the local library.  You may be suprised what you can find especially if you ask the librian for assistance.

As far as tips, tools would be the best advise.  A good inch pound torque wrench, PVC pipe will work as seal drivers, ring comporessor and valve lapper.

It is pretty expensive to do a good overhaul with new rod and piston and rings.  Also, many times the carbs are really wore along with the valve guides.  On a budget, you can risk just replacing the rings but if you want the engine to peform it's best you should consider a new rod, piston, and valve guides.  However, you need Briggs tools to replace and ream the valve guides or have a machine shop do the work.

If it were me, and the engine was on an old tractor or tiller, I would probably just replace the rings and gaskets.  If I were planning on keeping the engine/equipment for a long time I would just replace the entire engine.

Let me know if this helps.
Eric
