Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): snapper rear engine rider, briggs and stratton, spark tester

Question
I have a model 33127BE rear engine rider with a 12HP Briggs and Stratton engine.  My problem is with the white charging wire from the alternator/stator.  I got this mower used and I noticed that the white charging wire was on the same solenoid terminal with the starter cable.  As you know, this is improper as it is suppose to go on the terminal with the red ignition wire and positive battery cable.  I removed the flywheel and the old alternator/stator was fried.  I replaced it with a new one.  When I went to attach the white charging wire from the new alternator/stator to the solenoid terminal, I get blue/yellow sparks and audible current flow with the ignition switch off and the throttle cable in the stop position.  I dont think this is normal.  I have cleaned/tightened all grounds.  Also, I have replaced all old connectors with new ones.  The fuse is good on the red ignition wire.  What could my problem be? Could it be the solenoid?  Please advise-Thanks!

Answer
Hello Greg,

First off, your stop switch doesn't seem to be working properly.  In order to isolate the problem you need to test the Stop switch.

Start by inserting the spark plug lead on one end of the spark tester and attach the other end to ground (ie. an engine bolt)  .  Place the equipment switch control to stop (off).  Ground stop switch to cylinder.  Attempt to start engine using  key. You wouldn't normally be able to see any spark.  If there is any spark, closely view stop switch for defects.  Consult with your dealer if you find the switch defective.

Put the stop switch in run (start) position.  If engine isn't grounded to equipment, ensure the stop switch wire is not grounded. Now try to start the engine. You should be able to see a spark in the test equipment.  If no spark is detectable then look for wires that might be broken, short-outs, grounds, or a stop-switch that is not working.  After having determined that the Stop switch is working, reconnect the lead from the spark plug lead.

I hope that this info helps you to troubleshoot your problem.

Good Luck,

Howard
