I am changing the oil filter and oil in the 222-3010L transaxle.  I'd like to order the filter, but is a 3rd party brand available as the Sears filter is $33?   Also, what oil and amount of oil do I purchase for the transaxle?

When you compare $33 to the price of replacing the engine it is cheep.  Go with the Sears filter and transaxle oil.  Or ask them what the equivalent is.  

By transaxle do you mean that it is a hydrostatic drive?  If so many manufacturers used Mobil 454.  If you mean a regular gear drive transaxle there is grease inside.  Buy Betonite grease to fill it.
